Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, including arthritis and chronic pain, affect around one-third of the UK adult population. These conditions are one of the biggest contributors to years lived with disability (YLDs), the third most common reason for working days lost, and are associated with a higher prevalence of multi-morbidities. The impact on individuals' everyday lives, our healthcare systems, and society is substantial.
As the number of people living with multiple long-term conditions (LTCs) in the UK increases, rehabilitation becomes crucial for improving health outcomes, helping individuals stay at work, and optimising supported self-management. Currently, 43% of people in the UK are managing an LTC, and 13.4 million people in England have at least two LTCs, including MSK conditions. By 2035, it is projected that two-thirds of adults aged 65 years and older will have two or more LTCs.
Despite its importance, rehabilitation has often been treated as an afterthought rather than a core component of healthcare. Millions in the UK miss out on vital rehabilitation services due to long waiting times, poor access, underfunded services, health inequalities, and fragmented rehabilitation services across the healthcare system and MSK multi-professional teams.
With one-third of the UK adult population living with MSK conditions, effective and accessible rehabilitation is crucial. Effective rehabilitation is essential not only for survival but for enabling individuals to live well, stay active, and enjoy a better quality of life. It is time to prioritize rehabilitation as a fundamental aspect of healthcare to address the growing needs of those living with MSK conditions and other LTCs.
