Philip Dewhurst
Head of the School of Chiropractic,
Health Science University (HSU)
Philip Dewhurst is the Head of the School of Chiropractic at Health Science University (HSU). A chiropractor with nearly 20 years’ experience, Philip has been working in education for over 16 years and for the past 6 years has been the Head of Department for chiropractic. In his role Philip oversees the strategic development of the School and leads a team of over 30 academic staff delivering education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Philip leads the HSU School of Chiropractic to develop curricula which embrace diversity and inclusion and has seen the issues which health inequality can bring to patients and also to the training of the future healthcare workforce. Reflecting on these issues, Philip and his colleagues will challenge how we can improve health inequalities and instil in the next generation of healthcare providers the values of equal and accessible healthcare for all.
Philip has worked with local NHS trusts and NHS England WTE in developing AHP course provision to meet local demands. From this work, Philip has become involved in workforce development and is currently the project lead for the UK chiropractic profession’s Workforce Strategy.
Philip has worked, and continues to work, on national and international projects for the chiropractic profession including national education standards, regulatory Codes of Practice and international tests of competency. After completing a postgraduate masters in clinical science and a postgraduate certificate in medical education, in 2017 he enrolled on a professional doctorate in education (Ed.D) at the University of Reading, exploring the academic and non-academic factors which can affect student performance. Philip is a registrant member of the General Chiropractic Council’s Education Committee, a Fellow of the British Chiropractic Association and Royal College of Chiropractors and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
